The Oregon wine industry, likewise the rest of the countries wine and liquor in the country shut down during Prohibition, but resumed in 1933. Rebirth of the Oregon wine industry - The Oregon Wine industry started to rebuild in the 1960's.Hillcrest Vineyard, established in 1961 by Richard Sommer with the first vintage appearing in 1964. Richard planted the first Pinot Noir grapes in Oregon that was commercially available in the 1967 vintage. David Lett and Charles Coury were the next to plant Pinot Noir. In 1966, Lett planted a vineyard in the hills of Dundee called Eyrie Vineyards that many say ignited the flame and cast the light on Oregon's wine.
By 1970, the state had five bonded wineries, with 35 acres in production. Many out-of-state winemakers, the bulk from California and France, began migrating to Oregon, including Dick Erath of Erath Winery, Dick and Nancy Ponzi of Ponzi Vineyards, the Vuylsteke family of Oak Knoll, Susan and Bill Sokol Blosser from Sokol Blosser Winery, David and Jinny Adelsheim of Adelsheim Winery, Pat and Joe Campbell of Elk Grove Vineyards, Jerry and Ann Preston and Myron Redford of Amity Vineyards. These are some of the people who played a key role in Oregon's Willamette Valley wine countries success.
